Working on an ongoing going basis with Eric over at Acti-Video.com. Eric is definitely the man when it comes to the wedding industry here in the Sacramento area. He's also the guy who gave me my first shot in pro video. If there's a guy to call for event work, it's Eric.

Here's a performance I've been itching to get online. We went to Capistrano Hall at Sac State to shoot the close-ups with my Letus Extreme. Lucky for all of us the audio quality is stellar thanks to the Camilla Symphony Orchestra. Pianist Richard Cionco is one of the top performers in the nation, and is currently teaching at Sacramento State. A little side note, as I recall... the piano is a 1985 Steinway on loan from Mary Schnetz. Considered the Best "Romantics" Steinways on the west coast, the "sound" of this show is largely made possible through Mary's generosity. My personal favorite shot is at 24:30. Enjoy!!
Part of the fun of putting together the Second Saturday show was also offering a KVIE Premier Night the day before the show aired. Here's a few scenes from that evening

Forums are a wealth of information and a great way to link with others in your field. Lately I've been investigating a better mean of supporting my EX1 while going handheld and while lurking around on DVInfo.net I came across a spiffy, yet sturdy device called "EX1 Stronger Plates". I had looked into Zacuto and Indi Rails, but wanted something much more compact. After what seemed forever, the EX1 Stronger Plates looked like it will fill the bill until I raise a lot more cash for the Zacuto!
Buy a new camera and six months later it's obsolete. Renting is the pits, borrowing is even worse. There just never seems to be a good time to jump into an investment in gear. Typically, I'm about 9-12 months behind the curve. By then the bugs are worked out of a new system and the web forums have worked out all the kinks in post-production headaches. Right now I'm pretty happy with my lineup of HD equipment, offering clients what hey want, when they need it.
Some of the other local filmmakers have joined the bleeding edge and jumped into the realm of the Canon 5D/7D and have paid dearly in time and resources. Me? I prefer to wait it out. Rumor has it that Canon is set to offer a new product at NAB 2010, so that will be fun. If there's one thing I like it's talking gear. In the mean time, I'll continue to rent what I need.

In October I had the opportunity to go to the Re:Frame conference in San Fransisco, CA. And while the timing was less than perfect, I was able to hang with some of the best event filmmakers in the industry. In five days I picked up more techniques than I've learned in a year of book and magazine reading or internet search. See my links for some of the current gurus or go to the Re:Frame website.
I've also recently been involved with beta testing using the latest plug-ins from New Blue FX.com. Pretty amazing stuff. Definitely a company in touch with their clients, willing to listen should a problem arise. I've been using their products for a couple of years now and I'm quite pleased with the results. Render times can vary widely, but if there's an effect you need, or perhaps just a fix for a problem, NewBlue has been there to help. To top it off, I've recently been invited to showcase one of my videos on their site... pretty cool!
